Italian for “Poor Art,” or “Impoverished Art,” the term Arte Povera was introduced by the Italian art critic and curator Germano Celant in 1967 as a label for a small group of artists who were experimenting with non-traditional and politically charged art. These artists created and explored forms of expression such as ephemeral art, performance art, installations and assemblage. These techniques have since become extremely commonplace tools in contemporary art; in fact this is one of the reasons that such a small and short-lived movement continues to have significance today. It is considered the last great twentieth-century avant-garde movement.
