The first edition of The Dictionary of Victorian Painters was published in 1971 and contained details of 1,800 artists together with 250 illustrations. The Dictionary was later revised in two volumes, each complementary to one another yet entirely independent works depending upon the particular interest of the reader. The first volume contains over 11,000 entries, which are, in many cases, treated as short essays and contain details of exhibitions and gallery viewings of artists’ works. Much of the information is not to be found in any other works making The Dictionary an invaluable source of reference.The second volume contains an historical survey and illustrations – 750 black and white and 40 color plates. This format reflects more effectively the tremendous output and range of paintings of the time.

These are prefaced by a detailed historical survey by the author of the important painters and influences of the period. In short, the reader is furnished with a comprehensive, visual and written account of this exciting period in British art.
