This is the first of four volumes of the writings of one of this century’s most remarkable and prolific thinkers.Together with Jock Shepherd, his co-student at the Architectural Association, Geoffrey Jellicoe published his first book in 1925. In the literature on landscape architecture, Italian Gardens of the Renaissance has become the pivotal work and finest appraisal on the subject. To the original photographs of Jock Shepherd’s drawings, Jellicoe has now added a completely new text. In An Italian Study, his reassessment of his generative trip to Italy taken almost seventy years ago, he sets out to assess the way in which Shepherd’s remarkable drawings interpret the spirit of villa and garden. As a sequel to Italian Gardens of the Renaissance, in 1932 Jellicoe published Baroque Gardens of Austria.

Since so little has been written on the subject, and since this work has been long out of print, it is produced here in its entirety. It paints a fascinating picture of the great buildings and grounds commissioned by the Habsburg emperors and the Austro-Hungarian Princes and Prince Archbishops, and the work of the two famed Austrian architects of the times, Fischer von Erlach and Lukas von Hildebrandt. As an introduction both to these two early works, as well as to the other volumes in this series, Soundings is Jellicoe’s self appraisal of seven decades of practice as a landscape architect. His growing awareness over the decades of the influence of the subconscious on creative design is illustrated by the works of modern painters and sculptors which have heightened this awareness.Jellicoe’s contribution to the study and understanding of landscape design is internationally recognised; his years of experience, his breadth of vision and clarity of expression make this book an invaluable companion for all those committed to preserving and understanding the landscapes in which we live.
