The first of these two pre-war studies, Gardens & Design, was written in 1927 together with Jock Shepherd, Jellicoe’s collaborator on an earlier work – Italian Gardens of the Renaissance. In their thought-provoking study the authors analyse the influences and elements that unite house and garden, palace and scape. town and country, taking as ideal examples Little Thakeham in Sussex, the Villa Gamberaia outside Florence, and Versailles, while at the same time stressing by example the importance of’ many other houses and gardens in this country and on the Continent, and illustrating the text with some 175 black and white photographs and 30 line drawings. At the tail end of the twentieth century much of the content of Gardens & Design may appear to be no more than we are used to reading in the books on garden design which now proliferate.

But in 1927 its message could not have been more vital and exciting: garden design was to be seen as an art rather than as an appendage to horticulture. Furthermore since the world of garden designers and landscapers was locked in conflict at the time, the authors’ imaginative and straightforward approach was well received when the book was published. Today it remains one of the most creative books on the subject.Gardens of Europe, published ten years later is, in Jellicoe’s own words, ‘a journey through a hundred gardens to Rome following a course that is purely imaginary’. A leisurely summary of his earlier written works, it is ‘a gentle rumination’ on the many gardens he had visited, drawn, photographed and written about since his first journey abroad, to Italy, in 1925. The cumulative experience he had gained is here brilliantly telescoped into a highly readable and energetic account illustrated with 45 black and white illustrations.Jellicoe’s contribution to the study and understanding of landscape design is internationally recognised; his years of experience, his breadth of vision and clarity of expression make both the books in this volume, together with those in Volume I, invaluable for all those committed to understanding, and thereby preserving, the landscapes in which we live.
